WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Mint will release the third installment in its Best of the Mint semiquincentennial series on Aug. 6, offering a collector set featuring a 24-karat gold version of the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar alongside a companion silver medal as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary commemoration.
The set will go on sale at noon EDT on Aug. 6, with purchases limited to one per household during the first 24 hours. The Mint indicated pricing will follow its standard pricing table for gold coins.
The Best of the Mint series revisits five historic U.S. coin designs selected from an initial list of 21 coins spanning the Mint’s history. According to the Mint, the selections were made following public input and recommendations from numismatic experts. The five-coin series includes the 1916 Mercury Dime, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, 1804 Silver Dollar and 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin.
The Walking Liberty set includes a one-half-ounce, 24-karat gold coin struck at the West Point Mint and a one-ounce, 99.9% fine silver companion medal produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
The gold coin recreates the original 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar design by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, depicting Liberty striding toward the sunrise with an American flag draped over her shoulders while carrying laurel and oak branches. A Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the numeral “250” has been added to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial.
Its reverse features the original eagle design standing on a rocky perch with a young pine tree emerging from the stone, retaining the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”
The companion silver medal reinterprets elements of the Walking Liberty design in an Art Deco style. The obverse depicts Liberty extending her right hand while holding branches in her left, while the reverse continues the landscape with a soaring eagle. The medal bears the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The Walking Liberty set is the third release in the Best of the Mint series honoring the agency’s history during the U.S. Semiquincentennial celebration. The remaining releases will feature the 1804 Silver Dollar and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin.
