Philadelphia Fire Department Gets Nearly $3 Million From FEMA

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Fire Department will receive nearly $3 million in federal funding to improve operations and firefighter safety as part of more than $47.7 million in new FEMA fire-service grants across the Mid-Atlantic.

Philadelphia’s award comes through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program, which provides funding for equipment, training and other resources intended to strengthen emergency response and firefighter safety.

The latest round pushes FEMA’s fire-grant funding this year to more than $95 million across Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Nationwide, FEMA has awarded $648 million through three programs: Assistance to Firefighters Grants, Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grants, and Fire Prevention and Safety grants.

The Mid-Atlantic awards include nearly $5 million for Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and more than $3.4 million for Newport News, Virginia, to hire firefighters through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program.

Baltimore will receive nearly $2.8 million through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program for operations and safety improvements.

The American National Red Cross in Washington, D.C., was awarded nearly $1.5 million through the Fire Prevention and Safety program.

“By empowering fire departments to get the staff, training and equipment they need, FEMA is strengthening the resilience of American communities nationwide,” FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton said.
