IRS Urges Late Filers to Use Free Filing Program Before Oct. 15

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Internal Revenue Service is encouraging taxpayers who missed the federal tax filing deadline to submit their 2025 returns through IRS Free File, a program available through Oct. 15 that could help eligible filers claim uncollected refunds and tax credits.

The agency said more than 109 million taxpayers qualify for free guided tax preparation and electronic filing through IRS Free File, which is available to individuals with adjusted gross incomes of $89,000 or less.

The reminder comes as the IRS continues efforts to increase electronic filing and reach taxpayers who may have skipped filing despite being eligible for refunds or credits.

“IRS Free File makes it easy for taxpayers to meet their filing obligations and claim valuable tax credits at no cost,” IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano said. “As we continue to transform the IRS into a digital-first agency, tools like IRS Free File help provide a secure, convenient, and reliable filing experience for taxpayers.”

According to the IRS, eligible taxpayers can access free guided tax software through participating providers, while those above the income threshold may use Free File Fillable Forms to submit returns electronically.

The agency said electronic filing combined with direct deposit remains the fastest way for taxpayers to receive refunds. Participating software providers also offer built-in error checks and customer support, while some provide services in Spanish and free state tax return filing for eligible users.

The IRS noted that individuals who do not typically file returns may still qualify for refunds or tax credits and encouraged taxpayers to review their eligibility before the Oct. 15 deadline.

Additional information and filing options are available through the IRS Free File program at IRS.gov.
