What Inspectors Found Inside Chester County Kitchens Will Turn Stomachs

Restaurant Inspections

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department reported food safety violations from inspections conducted Wednesday at several licensed food facilities, including restaurants in Pottstown, West Chester, Exton, Kennett Square and Frazer.

The county said inspection reports are intended to provide a snapshot of conditions at the time of inspection and may not represent the long-term sanitation or food safety status of a business.

At Beijing Hunan, 82 Glocker Way in Pottstown, inspectors reported several violations, including open food cans stored in a bain-marie cooler, food handlers not washing hands between tasks, raw animal foods stored above ready-to-eat foods, missing date marks on prepared food held more than 24 hours and cold-holding issues.

Inspectors said a garlic and oil mixture was held at 50 degrees instead of 41 degrees or below and was voluntarily discarded. Food in a sushi display reach-in cooler also was measured at 50 degrees or above, and affected food was voluntarily discarded.

At Bierhaul Townhouse LLC, 15 N. Walnut St. in West Chester, a follow-up inspection found prepared time/temperature-controlled foods exceeding the seven-day holding limit, tabletop fryers not covered by a vent hood, upstairs prep-top foods held between 43 and 46 degrees and missing written procedures for eggs kept at room temperature.

Inspectors said the fryers may not be used unless relocated under a hood or removed from the facility.

At Fultoo Biryani House, 8 E. Welsh Pool Road in Exton, inspectors reported violations involving the person in charge’s food safety knowledge, unlabeled ingredient containers, missing sanitizer test strips, cooked rice held improperly and missing soap and paper towels at hand sinks.

The report said dishes were being washed without sanitizer available in the building. Inspectors said the facility was told it would be ordered closed if sanitizer was not obtained within 30 minutes, and sanitizer later arrived.

At Han Dynasty, 260 N. Pottstown Pike, Suite 68, in Exton, inspectors reported numerous violations, including improper handwashing, raw chicken stored above raw beef, uncovered food, food stored on the floor, missing date marks, improper cooling and thawing methods, chemical storage issues and extensive cleaning needs.

State St. in Kennett Square, inspectors cited violations involving opened maraschino cherries stored without refrigeration, a torn kitchen screen door, a dishwasher with no chlorine residual, missing consumer advisory language for drinks containing egg whites and cleaning needs for basement ice machines.

At Toninos Pizza & Pasta, 235 Lancaster Ave. in Frazer, inspectors reported violations involving dirty utensils, biofilm around an ice machine chute, raw clams, beef and fish stored above ready-to-eat foods, missing shellstock tags, an obstructed hand sink and an unlabeled chemical spray bottle.
