WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County health inspectors identified food safety and sanitation violations at three facilities on October 8, including improperly refrigerated yogurt at an Exton business, leaking wastewater from a food truck in Berwyn and inadequate kitchen ventilation at a West Chester middle school.
The Chester County Health Department documented nine violations across the three establishments, with Kiwi Yogurt in West Whiteland Township accounting for seven. Inspectors also reported 16 other food facilities in compliance during inspections conducted the same day.
At Kiwi Yogurt, 243 N. Pottstown Pike in Exton, inspectors found yogurt mixes stored at 46 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding the maximum required cold-holding temperature of 41 degrees.
The affected products were discarded during the inspection. The facility was directed to repair or adjust its refrigeration equipment to maintain safe temperatures.
Inspectors also identified two deeply scored cutting boards that required replacement and significant rusting on shelves inside the walk-in cooler.
Additional violations involved expired sanitizer test strips and inadequate cleaning of several non-food-contact surfaces, including yogurt cooler door gaskets, racks near sinks and waffle makers, and the exterior of a water dispenser near the registers.
Two food ingredient containers lacked labels identifying their contents. Those containers were labeled during the inspection.
The facility was also instructed to post a handwashing reminder at the sink in the women’s restroom.
At Handel’s Ice Cream Truck, associated with 573 Lancaster Avenue in Berwyn, inspectors observed gray wastewater leaking from the vehicle.
The Health Department directed the operator to repair the leak and ensure wastewater remains contained in the truck’s holding tank rather than discharging onto the ground.
At Aramark’s food service operation at Fugett Middle School, 500 Ellis Lane in West Chester, inspectors identified an inadequate kitchen exhaust system.
According to the inspection report, the hood system was not properly removing heat or steam. The equipment had already been evaluated, and replacement parts had been ordered.
The facility was instructed to complete the repairs and restore proper exhaust operation.
The Health Department’s reports distinguish between conditions corrected during an inspection and those requiring additional work. At Kiwi Yogurt, the improperly refrigerated products were discarded and unlabeled containers were corrected on-site, while other deficiencies required repairs, replacements or cleaning.
The department cautions that inspections represent conditions observed at a particular time and may not reflect an establishment’s overall or long-term sanitation practices.
Sixteen additional facilities were listed as in compliance on October 8.
