Chesco Inspectors Flag Smoke Damage, School Kitchen Problems

Food Safety Inspections

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County health inspectors cited smoke-related cleaning needs at a Malvern-area Indian restaurant and sanitation and equipment issues at a West Chester elementary school during food-facility inspections conducted Oct. 5.

Cross Roads (An Indian Eatery), 615 N. Morehall Road, Unit 100, Malvern, was inspected as part of an emergency response. Inspectors directed the restaurant to discard open boxes of paper goods, takeout containers stored on a kitchen shelf and open bags of takeout containers.

The Chester County Health Department also required cleaning of overhead shelving, walls throughout the facility, preparation and dishwashing areas, and the hood and filters. The inspection report noted that smoke had filled the space.

Inspectors additionally found the quaternary ammonia sanitizer concentration at the three-bay sink below 200 parts per million. The restaurant was directed to manually add sanitizer until the dispenser is serviced and to use the dishwasher for dishware because it was dispensing chlorine sanitizer at 50 parts per million.

Stove knobs, microwaves and food-contact surfaces also required cleaning and sanitizing, according to the report.

An electric fly-control unit in the preparation area did not appear to be supplied by a licensed pest-control operator and was not permitted in that location. Inspectors directed the restaurant to remove the device and any other residential pest-control devices.

At Aramark @ Mary C. Howse Elementary School, 641 W. Boot Road in West Chester, inspectors cited six issues.

Test strips used to measure sanitizer concentration at the three-compartment sink were missing an indicator strip and were discolored, prompting instructions to replace them.

A Traulsen hot-holding cabinet and Cleveland steamer were out of order. Inspectors directed the facility to repair or replace the equipment, or remove it if no longer needed.

The school kitchen and employee restroom lacked signs reminding food employees to wash their hands. Inspectors also required a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins in the employee restroom.

The report separately called for removal of an unused hot-holding cabinet.

Inspectors also addressed the facility’s mop sink, which had been removed during a recent renovation. The school was directed either to install an indoor mop sink in the kitchen, with Health Department approval of its location, or provide kitchen employees access to the nearest mop sink in a custodial closet. The department requested a decision by Oct. 9.
