Fruit Flies, Raw Chicken Flagged in Chesco Inspections

Restaurant Inspections

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County health inspectors cited fruit-fly activity, improper wastewater disposal and food-storage concerns during Oct. 6 inspections of two West Chester establishments, while 18 other facilities were listed as in compliance.

At Butler-O’Connor-McCormick, 837 E. Lincoln Ave., inspectors observed moderate fruit-fly activity in the main bar and directed the facility to use a certified pest-control operator, clean bar surfaces and plumbing, and promptly remove trash and bottles each day.

Inspectors also found that the facility’s mop sink had been removed and that gray water was being dumped outside. The restaurant was instructed to reinstall the mop sink and dispose of wastewater properly.

Other issues included soiled ceiling light shields in the kitchen and rusted shelving above the dishwasher tables, which inspectors directed the facility to clean or replace.

A follow-up inspection at Mercato Ristorante and Bar, 33 W. Market St., identified several food-safety concerns.

Inspectors found raw chicken stored above ready-to-eat food and directed the restaurant to move raw animal products below and away from ready-to-eat items to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Single-use food containers were also being reused for storage. Inspectors instructed the restaurant to stop reusing them and switch to approved, reusable food-grade containers.

At the server station and Pizza Station, handwashing sinks contained food residue, a pizza cutter and other utensils, indicating the sinks were being used for purposes other than handwashing.

Inspectors also found chemical bottles without proper labels and directed the restaurant to identify each container with the common name of its contents.
