HARRISBURG, PA — On Thursday, April 24, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives adopted two resolutions aimed at improving road safety and raising awareness about critical driving behaviors. Authored by House Transportation Committee Chairman Ed Neilson and state Rep. Brandon Markosek, these measures align with ongoing efforts to protect roadway workers and the general public.
House Resolution 196, introduced by Neilson, designates April 2025 as “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. This initiative follows Neilson’s work during the 2023-2024 legislative session to advance Senate Bill 37, which prohibits the use of handheld devices while driving in the state.
House Resolution 95, authored by Markosek, designates April 21 through 25, 2025 as “National Work Zone Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. Markosek emphasized the importance of the measure, stating, “Spring marks the beginning of construction season, with crews improving 120,000 miles of roads and thousands of bridges across Pennsylvania. I introduced this resolution for ‘National Work Zone Awareness Week’ to remind everyone that safe driving saves lives, particularly in work zones. Let’s all do our part to slow down to protect the workers who are improving our roads and to ensure everyone, workers and travelers, make it home safely.”
Neilson highlighted the need for increased safety precautions in work zones and the importance of ongoing education about distracted driving. “Both of these resolutions will remind drivers to slow down, put down their phones and pay attention to the road, especially when they see the flashing lights of a work zone,” he said. “The hardworking men and women who repair our roads, bridges, and highways deserve to feel safe while at work.” Since 1970, 90 PennDOT employees have lost their lives while working on Pennsylvania’s roads, underscoring the urgency of these measures.
These resolutions reflect the Pennsylvania House’s commitment to fostering safer driving habits and protecting road workers. Looking ahead, transportation leaders aim to sustain focus on legislative measures and public awareness efforts that reduce risks for all road users and ensure greater safety for workers and travelers alike.
