WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County has approved more than $1.7 million in grants for park improvements and open space preservation, directing funding to eight projects that expand public recreation, preserve undeveloped land and improve accessibility across the county.
The grants, approved by the Chester County Commissioners through the county’s Preservation Partnership Program, will support municipal park upgrades and land conservation efforts undertaken by nonprofit organizations.
County officials indicated that the funding continues a program that has operated for more than three decades to preserve natural, agricultural, historic and cultural resources while expanding public access to parks and open space.
The largest conservation grant, $394,800, was awarded to the Brandywine Conservancy to help acquire a conservation easement on approximately 55 acres spanning four parcels in West Bradford Township. The property includes a section of Broad Run Creek, walking trails and a public parking area.
Natural Lands received $322,200 to acquire 6.8 acres along the West Branch Brandywine Creek in Newlin Township, expanding the ChesLen Preserve.
Willistown Conservation Trust was awarded $250,000 toward the purchase of 20 acres in Willistown Township that will become part of Rushton Woods Preserve.
On the municipal side, East Coventry Township received $250,000 to construct a boat ramp, access road and parking for vehicles and boat trailers at Towpath Park, creating a connection between the Schuylkill River Trail and the Schuylkill River Water Trail.
East Fallowfield Township was awarded $218,200 to expand amenities at East Fallowfield Community Park, including a sand volleyball court, an accessible playground, ADA-compliant walking paths, stormwater improvements and a parking lot.
East Bradford Township received $175,000 to improve accessibility at East Bradford Park through installation of ADA-compliant playground equipment, upgraded pathways and parking, landscaping and rehabilitation of tennis courts.
West Chester Borough was awarded $100,000 for continued improvements at John O. Green Park, including a new swing set, upgraded playground, pavilion expansion and additional landscaping with integrated seating.
Parkesburg Borough received $67,034 for the first phase of a planned multi-stage renovation of Minch Park. The initial work includes construction of an ADA-compliant playground and gazebo along with rehabilitation of the park’s tennis court.
In a joint statement, Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz and Eric Roe stated that the county’s investments are intended to preserve natural resources while improving recreational opportunities.
“We are proud to partner with Chester County municipalities and land trusts on investments like these that ensure safe recreational spaces, protect the environment, and preserve Chester County’s remarkable natural resources,” the commissioners said. “For more than three decades, Chester County residents have supported dedicating funds to such projects as part of our commitment to maintaining a high quality of life.”
