Vanguard to Rename U.S. Equity Index Funds After Morningstar Rebrand

Vanguard

VALLEY FORGE, PA — Vanguard Group said multiple U.S. equity index funds will be renamed in July 2026 following Morningstar, Inc.’s rebranding of the CRSP Market Indexes as Morningstar Indexes.

The changes will add “Morningstar” to the names of the affected funds and their underlying indexes. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, for example, will become Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market Index Fund.

The company said the name changes will not alter the funds’ investment objectives, portfolio management strategies, or benchmark tracking methodologies.

Vanguard said several of its U.S. equity index funds began tracking the then-CRSP benchmarks in 2013. The indexes use rules-based methodologies intended to represent market segments while maintaining investability and minimizing turnover costs.

Key features of the indexes include float-adjusted market capitalization weighting, scheduled rebalancing, transition mechanisms for securities moving between market segments, and multidimensional growth and value classifications.

“Index funds are designed to give investors broad, low-cost exposure to the markets, and that starts with the quality of the benchmarks they track,” Rodney Comegys, chief investment officer of Vanguard Capital Management and head of global equity, said in a statement.

Vanguard said the Morningstar indexes align with the firm’s long-term approach to diversified, low-cost investing and benchmark construction.

“At Morningstar Indexes, our focus is on building benchmarks that investors and asset managers can rely on over time,” Amelia Furr, president of Morningstar Indexes, said in a statement. “Our rules-based approach, emphasis on investability, and thoughtful rebalancing practices are designed to support efficient implementation and long-term investing.”

The changes follow Morningstar’s recent rebranding of the CRSP index family, which is widely used by investment managers and index funds tracking U.S. equity markets.
