Report Finds Most B2B Companies Absent From AI Buyer Discovery

MALVERN, PA — A new report from go-to-market services firm 2X found that most B2B companies are largely absent from early-stage buyer discovery in generative artificial intelligence platforms, limiting their visibility during key purchasing decisions.

The 2026 2X AI Visibility Index analyzed 70 companies and found that only 4.3% appeared in early-stage buyer queries, while 95.7% were visible primarily when users already searched for them by name.

The study examined how brands appear in AI-generated responses used by buyers researching vendors and solutions, measuring visibility across discovery, evaluation, and purchase stages.

Lisa Cole, chief marketing, product and AI officer at 2X, said the findings highlight a shift in how buyers evaluate companies.

“AI is increasingly shaping perception, trust, and vendor shortlists,” Cole said.

The report found that many companies operate with what researchers described as an “inverted discovery funnel,” where visibility occurs late in the buying process rather than during initial research.

Researchers identified several factors contributing to low visibility, including incomplete structured data, limited third-party citations, weak review ecosystems, and restricted access for AI crawlers.

In some cases, large companies showed little presence in basic category-level searches, according to the report.

Will Waugh, executive director of the 2X AI Innovation Lab, said companies must adapt their digital presence to remain competitive.

“If AI systems don’t recognize your brand as an authoritative answer to buyer questions, you risk losing opportunities before sales teams even know the deal exists,” Waugh said.

The report also categorizes companies into four stages of AI visibility maturity, ranging from “authority leaders” with strong discoverability to “emerging and lagging” organizations with limited presence.

The findings suggest that AI-generated responses are increasingly influencing buyer decisions before direct engagement with sales teams.
