Vishay Intertechnology Unveils High-Speed Photodiode for Wearable Devices

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH), a global manufacturer and supplier of discrete semiconductors and passive components, has expanded its optoelectronics portfolio with the launch of a high-speed silicon PIN photodiode designed to enhance sensitivity for visible light.

The new device, named VEMD2704, comes in a compact 2.0 mm by 1.8 mm by 0.6 mm top-view, surface-mount package. It features clear epoxy for maximum sensitivity and fast switching times of 70 ns, coupled with low capacitance of 17.6 pF, making it ideal for precise signal detection in wearable devices.

The VEMD2704 boasts a radiant-sensitive area measuring 1.51 mm² and high radiant sensitivity, with a reverse light current of 1.17 µA and dark current of 0.03 nA. This capability enables the device to detect visible and near-infrared radiation across a broad spectrum range from 350 nm to 1100 nm.

In wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, the VEMD2704 can work in tandem with green LEDs for optical heart rate detection and red LEDs for pulse oximetry applications. These capabilities are crucial in the rapidly evolving wearable industry, where accurate health monitoring is paramount.

Apart from its superior performance, the VEMD2704 offers a reduced size compared to previous-generation solutions. This design enables easier integration into smaller products like earbuds, allows for the inclusion of several photodiodes in the optical system for more precise signal detection, and offers increased flexibility in sensor placement.

Additionally, the device is available at a lower cost than previous-generation photodiodes, making it an attractive option for cost-sensitive devices such as smart bands.

The VEMD2704 has a ± 67° angle of half-sensitivity, operates within a temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C, and features a 940 nm wavelength of peak sensitivity. It complies with RoHS, is halogen-free, and carries the Vishay Green label, indicating its commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

The photodiode has a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) of 3 in accordance with J-STD-020, ensuring a floor life of 168 hours.

Vishay Intertechnology has made samples and production quantities of the VEMD2704 available now, with lead times of 20 weeks. This launch represents an important step forward for the company as it continues to innovate and meet the growing needs of the electronics industry.
