HIGHLAND TWP, PA — A 4-year-old child died Thursday after being struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing Route 41 in Highland Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police information reported by NBC10, marking a fatal pedestrian crash along the heavily traveled Chester County corridor.
The crash occurred shortly before 12:25 p.m. Sept. 24 on Route 41 north of Highland Road.
State police told NBC10 the child had been walking in a grassy area along the shoulder of the southbound lane while a tractor-trailer traveled north on Route 41.
The child then entered the highway, crossed the southbound lane and continued into the northbound lane, where the tractor-trailer struck the child, according to police.
The child was transported to Lancaster General Hospital and died shortly afterward. Authorities did not publicly identify the child.
NBC10’s report also did not identify the tractor-trailer driver. State police did not disclose whether an adult was accompanying the child at the time of the crash.
The circumstances surrounding how the child came to be along the highway and entered the roadway were not detailed in the information released by police. The crash remains under investigation.
