PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania SPCA has reduced adoption fees to $5 for all pit bull-type dogs through July 26 as the organization seeks to boost placements during the typically slower summer adoption season while challenging misconceptions about the dogs.

The annual Pittiefest promotion, now in its third year, began Wednesday and runs at the PSPCA’s Philadelphia, Danville, Lancaster and Main Line Animal Rescue locations. The initiative is sponsored by The John & Christine Tortorella Family Foundation, the organization announced.

The adoption campaign comes after nearly 60 pit bull-type dogs found homes during last year’s event.

In addition to discounted adoption fees, the PSPCA is using the campaign to educate prospective adopters about common misconceptions surrounding pit bull-type dogs. The organization notes that “pit bull” is not a single breed but an umbrella term for dogs with similar physical characteristics, and says the long-standing claim that they possess “locking jaws” has no basis in canine anatomy.

The PSPCA also points to temperament evaluations, stating that pit bull-type dogs consistently perform well in behavioral testing and are often rated among the more even-tempered and friendly dogs.

“Pittiefest has become such an inspiring time at the Pennsylvania SPCA,” Gillian Kocher, the organization’s director of public relations, stated. “We love celebrating these special pups, and seeing so many of them find homes is truly heartwarming. We hope the 2026 iteration will bring even more joy and find homes for so many deserving pups.”

All standard adoption policies and procedures remain in effect during the promotion, and prospective adopters can visit any of the four participating PSPCA locations during regular business hours to meet available dogs.

The $5 adoption promotion runs through Sunday, July 26.
