A Brief History of Beer in America

Beer has been brewed in America since the early days of colonization. In fact, one of the first things that British settlers did when they arrived in the New World was to start brewing beer. However, it wasn’t until the 16th century that beer became widely available in the United States. At that time, European immigrants brought over their brewing traditions, and beer soon became a staple of the American diet.

The Rise of Craft Brewing in America

Although mass-produced beer has always been popular in America, it wasn’t until the late 20th century that craft brewing began to take off. In 1978, President Carter signed a law that made it legal for home brewers to produce beer for personal consumption. This law led to a boom in homebrewing, and by the 1980s, there were already several hundred craft breweries operating in the United States. Today, there are over 7,000 breweries in America, and craft beer is more popular than ever.
