DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Students across the Downingtown Area School District took part in meaningful assemblies focused on acceptance and belonging, as Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Darius Cooper and Miss Pennsylvania Victoria Vespico visited local schools in recognition of Autism Acceptance Month.
Held at Brandywine Wallace Elementary School and Lionville Elementary School, the events brought together students and staff for interactive programs centered on kindness, inclusion, and understanding. The assemblies created an engaging and positive atmosphere, with students participating in discussions, games, and a question-and-answer session with the guest speakers.
Cooper shared his personal experiences and encouraged students to support one another through everyday actions, while Vespico emphasized the importance of making peers feel seen and valued. The visits reinforced the district’s focus on building a welcoming school environment for all students.
“Today was so exciting. It was a blessing to be out here with the kids—they put a smile on my face,” Cooper said. “I love coming to these engaging events because, yes, it’s for them, but also for me.”
Students also learned about sensory awareness, including how tools like noise-canceling headphones can help classmates who experience noise sensitivity. Demonstrations such as “quiet clapping” provided students with practical ways to show encouragement while being mindful of others.
Justin Brown, director of Student Relations and School Climate, said the assemblies play an important role in shaping school culture.
“Creating a school community rooted in kindness and understanding starts with helping students see and value one another’s differences,” Brown said. “Experiences like this encourage our students to lead with empathy and build meaningful connections.”
District leaders expressed appreciation to Darius Cooper and Victoria Vespico for volunteering their time to connect with students, as well as the Office of Student Relations and School Climate for organizing the events and supporting the district’s commitment to inclusion.
With continued programming planned throughout the year, district officials say initiatives like these will remain a key part of promoting empathy, connection, and a strong sense of belonging for all students.
