DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A powerful story of survival, resilience, and history will come directly into local homes this May as the Downingtown Area School District invites the community to hear from a Holocaust survivor whose life began in hiding during World War II.
As part of its recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, DASD will host Dr. Jack Wetter for a live virtual presentation, offering students, families, and community members a rare opportunity to hear firsthand about one of history’s most defining periods.
Born in 1943 in Brussels, Belgium, while his family hid from Nazi persecution in the basement of an apartment building, Wetter’s story brings a deeply personal perspective to the realities of the Holocaust—and the enduring importance of remembrance.
Learning Through Lived Experience
The virtual event is presented in partnership with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center and is designed to foster understanding, empathy, and meaningful dialogue across the community.
District leaders say the program reflects a broader effort to highlight diverse histories and voices throughout the month of May, connecting global events to local learning.
“By recognizing these voices, we deepen empathy, broaden perspectives, and reinforce our commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive,” said Justin Brown, DASD Director of Student Relations and School Climate.
Throughout the month, students and staff across the district will participate in additional activities and discussions focused on the contributions and experiences of Jewish American and AAPI communities.
A Community Invitation
The May 11 presentation is open to the entire DASD community, offering a meaningful opportunity for residents to come together—virtually—to reflect on history and its continued relevance today.
Organizers encourage families, students, and community members to take part in what promises to be a memorable and educational experience.
