DELAWARE and CHESTER COUNTIES, PA — Natalia Rodriguez Lopez, a student at Delaware County Community College (DCCC), has been awarded a 2024 Dunkin’ Philadelphia Regional Scholarship. Lopez, a native of Colombia, is among 20 students chosen from over 1,260 applicants to receive $5,000 towards their education.

The scholarship supports students pursuing part-time or full-time undergraduate degrees at accredited institutions. Selection criteria included academic performance, leadership, and community involvement.

Lopez excels academically. Her accomplishments earned her an invitation to join Beta Psi Pi, DCCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges. She serves as vice president of service for the chapter and was named to the College’s President’s List in spring 2024.

Service is a key part of Lopez’s life. “The quality and affordable education initially attracted me to DCCC,” she said. “The Nursing program has connections with the most important hospitals and health care facilities in the area, and students are trained by qualified professionals.” Lopez emphasized the support she has received from the college, including mentoring, textbook loans, and food pantry resources. “As an international student living abroad far away from my family, having a supportive place and group of people to turn to for help is a game changer.”

Lopez plans to work as a registered nurse after graduation while pursuing her bachelor’s degree. She aims to gain field experience and achieve her educational goals simultaneously. Teaching is also on her horizon as she hopes to inspire future students. “I want to complete my degree while working part time as a nurse, to get experience in the field while achieving my educational goals. Teaching is another long-term goal because I am passionate about academia. I would love to inspire other students as many of my DCCC professors have inspired me.”

She credits her parents with instilling a strong work ethic and determination. “My parents taught me that I should always aim to give my best effort in everything I do. Since I started my life abroad, I have committed myself to do so and make them proud. This scholarship motivates me to keep pushing to make my dreams come true. I want other minority students to see that it is possible to change your life and achieve the goals you have in your mind.”

Lopez’s story is a testament to the impact of dedication and the importance of supportive educational environments. Through her achievements and aspirations, she inspires others to pursue their dreams and make a difference in their communities.
