PHOENIXVILLE, PA — The annual Chester County Knowledge Bowl brought together middle school students from across the region to test their academic strengths on Tuesday, May 20, at the Technical College High School (TCHS) Pickering Campus. Organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), the daylong event featured 42 teams of sixth through eighth graders competing in a high-energy trivia competition.
The teams, consisting of 4–8 students each, showcased their knowledge across multiple subjects, including math, literature, science, world history, and entertainment. The competition was divided into four timed rounds, where student teams raced to answer 60 questions, emphasizing strategy, coordination, and quick thinking.
Despite the in-service day giving most students a day off from school, participants chose to dedicate their time to academic achievement. “The Chester County Knowledge Bowl stands out because it pushes students to think fast and work as a team while still keeping the day fun,” said Kathy Gurnee, special events coordinator for the CCIU.
Katie Van Thuyne, a gifted support teacher at Valley Forge Middle School, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the competition’s unique value. “The Knowledge Bowl provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their strengths in various areas, while also working on a team that is fun, competitive, and rewarding for them,” she said.
The highlight of the day came during the championship rounds. For the seventh and eighth-grade competition, Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School’s 7/8 C team emerged as champions with an impressive 153 points. Downingtown Middle School’s 7/8 A team took second place with 144 points, while Peirce Middle School’s 7/8 A team earned third with 133 points.
For the sixth-grade teams, Charles F. Patton Middle School’s 6 C team claimed first place, scoring 126 points. They narrowly edged out Peirce Middle School’s sixth-grade team, which earned second place with 125 points. Valley Forge Middle School’s 6 B team secured third place with 123 points.
The students’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the day. “Today is my birthday, and I feel really proud of myself for winning this prize… it feels like a birthday gift,” said Karthik Sriadibhatla, a sixth grader from Valley Forge Middle School’s 6 B team.
Nikhisha Arjun, an eighth grader from Valley Forge Middle School, appreciated the competitive yet fun atmosphere, saying, “I like having the opportunity to compete against different schools while learning new things as we answer questions. It is important to make sure you have fun with your friends.”
The Chester County Knowledge Bowl continues to highlight the importance of teamwork, critical thinking, and academic excellence. Congratulations to all 42 teams that participated in this year’s event, showcasing not only their knowledge but their dedication to learning and collaboration.
