COATESVILLE, PA — The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW), a community pillar in Chester County, Pennsylvania, recently celebrated a milestone – 130 years since the establishment of the Coatesville YMCA, the first of the organization’s locations. An event marking the archival unveiling took place on March 7 at the Arches in Coatesville, where the organization’s past Board Chair, Donna Urian, declared the renaming of the Brandywine Branch to the Coatesville Branch, a move that highlights the organization’s deep roots in Coatesville.

This renaming, according to Bertram L. Lawson, II, YGBW’s president and CEO, serves as more than just a celebration of the anniversary – it’s a steadfast recommitment to the organization’s primary mission of youth development, especially amongst the 12-21 age bracket. And bettering the future for these young members of the community is a commitment the organization isn’t taking lightly.

At its birthday bash, the organization took time to honor its rich history and community support, which dates back to its founding in 1894, thanks to a successful fundraising effort led by the Huston family. In the same spirit, YGBW continues to rely on the generosity of the community to ensure vital services reach all, regardless of income. It was therefore fitting that the birthday celebration also served as the launch for the organization’s annual campaign.

“This is community support at its best,” commented Mary Curcio, Vice President of Philanthropy, illustrating how the cycle of kindness and generosity operates within the community, from enabling swim lessons for a child to receiving sponsorships from local organizations.

Moving forward, YGBW’s dedication to renewing its commitment to the Coatesville community includes expansion of its services and offerings throughout the County to ensure a broader reach. Jessica Rigo, Executive Director of the renamed Coatesville Branch, highlighted their focus on promoting equitable communities.

A significant part of this commitment to the community is a sizable investment in youth development – a projected 1.4 million dollars toward services and programming for youth starting in 2024. Spearheading this initiative is YGBW’s Senior Association Director of Teen Development, Jazmyn Hudson, a Chester County native, who is dedicated to being part of the solution to challenges facing youth and families.

Heather W. Wilson, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, reinforced the organization’s readiness to meet the growing needs of the county’s youth, which make up nearly 13 percent of the population. With a keen focus on the future generation, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine is indeed marking a new chapter in its 130-year history, promising a stronger, more inclusive Chester County.
