This was because of the large number of mills that, at one time, lined the East Branch Brandywine Creek. It was eventually named after Thomas Downing, a businessperson who owned several of those mills.
Today, thanks to the Victory Brewing Company, the town has become a major destination location for craft beer aficionados and ethicists. Regardless, the community is home to many other exceptional businesses.
