PHILADELPHIA, PA — Center City District has launched an interactive map covering more than 70 coffee shops and cafés across downtown Philadelphia, using the city’s expanding coffee market to encourage pedestrian traffic to local businesses and public spaces.
The Center City Coffee Trail includes every coffee shop and café within the district’s boundaries, along with a curated guide to local businesses and specialty drinks. Center City District plans to update the digital map as new businesses open and seasonal offerings change.
Coffee shops are within a five-minute walk from any location in the district’s footprint, according to Center City District. Fifty-four percent of the shops are independent, regional or national brands founded in Philadelphia.
The concentration has grown over the past two years, with more than 20 coffee shops opening or announcing plans to open in Center City, according to the district’s economic development data.
That growth includes Philadelphia-based businesses such as Madis Coffee Roasters and Vibrant Coffee Roasters, new national franchises including Moka & Co. and MOTW Coffee & Pastries, and additional locations from Dunkin’ and Starbucks.
Philadelphia has also produced coffee companies that expanded beyond the city, including La Colombe and Saxbys, while local operators including Elixr, Rival Bros. and Nook remain part of the city’s roasting and café market.
“Center City’s robust yet under-appreciated coffee culture creates something not possible elsewhere: a singular place where people can caffeinate, connect and explore hundreds of shops and restaurants, all within a walkable distance,” Center City District President and CEO Prema Katari Gupta said.
The launch includes a one-week promotion offering select specialty drinks for $4 at 15 participating businesses through Friday, Oct. 2.
Participating locations and specials include Bar Cicci, 1620 Sansom St., shakerato; Bower Café, 1213 Walnut St., classic cappuccino; Capriccio Café & Bar at Cret Park, 110 N. 16th St., spiced apple pie latte; and Gran Caffe L’Aquila, 1716 Chestnut St., shakerato.
J’aime French Bakery, 212 S. 12th St., is offering a classic cappuccino; Mad Cat Brewtique, 2036 Sansom St., a hot latte or freddo; and Madis Coffee Roasters, at 1441 Chestnut St. and 601 Walnut St., a pumpkin cold foam cold brew.
MOTW Coffee & Pastries, 2101 Market St., Suite 1, is offering a classic or flavored cappuccino; Nook Bakery & Coffee Bar, 15 S. 20th St., a flat white; Palm Vintage, 1414 S. Penn Square, a caramel brûlée latte; and Passero’s Coffee Roasters, at 834 Chestnut St. and 100 E. Penn Square in the Wanamaker Building, a spiced brown sugar iced coffee.
Saxbys at the Shops at Liberty Place, 1625 Chestnut St., is offering a Boston cream cold brew; The Ground Rittenhouse, 120 S. 18th St., a taro blueberry cobbler latte; Time & Peace, 36 S. 7th St., a walnut cappuccino; and Vibrant Coffee Roasters & Bakery, 121 S. Broad St., a classic cappuccino.
Center City District is also distributing a hand-drawn print version of the trail through its community service representatives.
