Cold Food, Broken Equipment, and Sanitation Issues Hit Chester County Kitchens

Food Safety Inspections

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department cited multiple Chester County food establishments for food safety and sanitation violations during inspections conducted May 7, including temperature control issues, improper food storage, malfunctioning equipment, and handwashing violations.

At ARAMARK @ Downingtown East Senior High School, inspectors cited improper hot and cold holding temperatures for chicken products and refrigerated foods. A dishwashing rinse gauge was also found improperly calibrated, and sanitizer test kits were damaged or incomplete. The facility was ordered to correct several issues within 48 hours to seven days.

Chipotle Mexican Grill #1198 was cited after inspectors found its dishwasher out of service, sanitizer water contaminated with food particles, and ice stored in a handwashing sink. Inspectors also ordered the restaurant to clean and sanitize the customer self-service soda machine and areas around the sink and dishwasher.

At New Hong Kong Buffet, inspectors found bread stored beneath raw chicken, foods lacking required date markings, and thawed clams left at room temperature during preparation. The facility was also ordered to clean equipment including a tabletop can opener and pipes beneath the cooking line.

The New West Chester Diner received multiple violations tied to food storage, sanitation, and pest control practices. Inspectors found ready-to-eat foods covered with paper towels, uncovered food containers in refrigerators, pineapple stored in opened metal cans, and numerous refrigerated items lacking date labels. Additional violations included dirty ice machines, fly strips hanging near food preparation areas, residential pest spray stored in the kitchen, and a handwashing sink with no hot water due to a leak.

At W C Atkinson Men’s Shelter, inspectors documented refrigeration temperatures between 44 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in the disposal of potentially hazardous foods. The shelter was also cited for a nonfunctioning hot water valve at a handwashing sink, missing food thermometers, and the absence of a chlorine sanitizer test kit.
