HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania voters face a series of upcoming deadlines ahead of the May 19 primary election, as state officials launch a voter education campaign to increase awareness of registration, mail ballot, and voting requirements.
What This Means for You
- You must register by May 4 to vote in the primary
- Mail ballot applications are due by May 12
- Only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote in primary races
Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced the Department of State’s 2026 voter education initiative, which aims to provide clear, nonpartisan information about how and when eligible residents can participate in the election.
Key Dates to Know
State officials outlined several deadlines voters must meet to participate in the primary:
- May 4: Last day to register to vote
- May 12: Last day to apply for a mail ballot
- May 19: Primary Day, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- 8 p.m. May 19: Deadline for mail ballots to be received
Pennsylvania uses a closed primary system, meaning only voters registered with a political party can vote in that party’s primary contests.
However, all voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote on local ballot questions that appear on the ballot.
Additional Election on the Ballot
In York County, voters in the 196th Legislative District will also participate in a special election to fill a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on the same day.
Tools and Resources for Voters
The Department of State is providing a voter education toolkit that includes graphics and materials designed to help share election information.
These resources are available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Vietnamese.
The state’s voter website, https://www.vote.pa.gov, includes tools such as a polling place locator, contact information for county election offices, and guidance for first-time voters, mail-in voters, seniors, people with disabilities, and military members.
State’s Focus on Voter Participation
“Keeping Pennsylvania voters informed about elections remains a crucial part of the Shapiro Administration’s commitment to strengthening our democracy and ensuring safe and secure elections,” Schmidt said.
Officials said the campaign is intended to ensure voters understand their options and deadlines so they can successfully cast a ballot in the upcoming primary.
