Plan Ahead: Overnight I-95 Closures in Philly Start Tonight for Major Upgrades

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced overnight closures on a key section of Interstate 95 in Center City Philadelphia as part of preparatory work for the ongoing $329 million I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project. These closures and travel restrictions will facilitate the placement of deck beams on southbound lanes.

Effective tonight, Wednesday, June 4, southbound I-95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 to southbound I-95 will close between I-676 and the Columbus Boulevard on-ramp at E. Morris Street/Water Street. The closures will be in place from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

Further restrictions will follow starting Sunday, June 8, running through Friday, July 18, excluding the Independence Day weekend. During this period, southbound I-95, the ramp from eastbound I-676 to southbound I-95, and the inside northbound lane between Spruce Street and Market Street will close nightly from Sundays to Thursdays, 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Detours will redirect southbound commuters via the I-676 Interchange, Callowhill Street, and Columbus Boulevard to access I-95 at E. Morris Street/Water Street. Drivers traveling east on I-676 toward southbound I-95 will be rerouted using Race Street and Columbus Boulevard.

PennDOT has advised motorists to allow extra time to account for anticipated congestion and delays in the affected areas. All operations are weather-dependent and subject to rescheduling as necessary.

The CAP project aims to enhance connections across Philadelphia by creating new infrastructure over I-95, improving accessibility and safety along this vital corridor.
