KING OF PRUSSIA, PA — Universal Health Services, Inc. (NYSE: UHS) announced robust financial performance for the first quarter of 2025, with net income attributable to UHS rising to $316.7 million ($4.80 per diluted share), compared to $261.8 million ($3.82 per diluted share) for the same period in 2024. Adjusted net income also showed growth, reaching $319.5 million ($4.84 per diluted share) from $253.1 million ($3.70 per diluted share) in Q1 2024.
Net revenues increased by 6.7% year-over-year, totaling $4.1 billion for Q1 2025, up from $3.844 billion in 2024. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA net of noncontrolling interests) rose to $603.9 million, compared to $525.9 million during the prior year’s first quarter.
Operational Highlights
UHS experienced steady growth across its acute care services on a same-facility basis, driven by a 2.4% increase in adjusted admissions alongside a 6.5% net revenue increase. Behavioral health services recorded a modest decline in admissions (-1.6%) but saw a 5.5% growth in net revenues, thanks to higher revenue per admission and patient day.
Cash Flow and Liquidity
Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $360 million, slightly down from $396 million in Q1 2024. The company cited delays in Medicaid payments in certain states, including Nevada, as contributing factors. Despite this, UHS maintained robust liquidity, with $1.02 billion in available borrowing capacity under its $1.3 billion revolving credit facility as of March 31, 2025.
Stock Repurchases
UHS continued its shareholder-focused initiatives, repurchasing 1.0 million shares of its Class B common stock during Q1 2025 at an average price of $181 per share, totaling $180.6 million. The company retained $643.7 million in repurchase authorization as of the end of the quarter.
