EMBREEVILLE, PA — A string of crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police from the Embreeville barracks shows how quickly Chester County roads turned hazardous this winter, with motorists sliding into guardrails, medians, poles, trees, and other vehicles from early January through early February, according to a multi-incident public information release.
The incidents, documented across multiple municipalities, reflect recurring conditions cited by troopers: snow-covered pavement and shoulders, icy patches, standing meltwater, and reduced traction on curves and ramps. In several cases, police reported that vehicles left their lanes or struck roadside hazards after drivers allegedly failed to maintain control or adjust speed for conditions.
The earliest crash in the release occurred Monday, January 6, at 6:26 p.m. on the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass in Downingtown Borough, where troopers reported a two-vehicle collision involving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 20-year-old Downingtown man and a 2023 Kia Sportage driven by a 77-year-old East Fallowfield woman. Police said traffic was stopped in the middle lane when the Jeep struck the rear of the Kia. Troopers reported no injuries and said the Jeep was towed while the Kia sustained functional damage. Police indicated the Jeep driver was cited for allegedly following too closely and warned for allegedly driving at an unsafe speed.
On Friday, January 10, at 11:44 a.m., troopers investigated a single-vehicle crash on Downingtown Pike at Harmony Hill Road in West Bradford Township involving a 2024 BMW 430 Series driven by a 61-year-old West Chester woman. Police reported the BMW left the roadway and struck an embankment before coming to rest, with no injuries reported.
The next day, Saturday, January 11, at 10:52 a.m., state police responded to a one-vehicle crash on Hollow Road in Charlestown Township, where a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by an 18-year-old Malvern woman was reported to have left the roadway during winter-storm conditions and struck a fence near the 3100 block of Hollow Road. Troopers reported no injuries at the scene and noted the vehicle sustained disabling damage.
On Friday, January 17, at 9:48 a.m., troopers investigated a crash at Conestoga Avenue and Water Street in Honey Brook Borough involving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 28-year-old Honey Brook man. On Sunday, January 18, at 6:48 a.m., troopers responded to a crash on the U.S. 30 Bypass just east of Reeceville Road in Caln Township involving a 2017 Nissan Rogue driven by a 30-year-old Parkesburg man. Police reported the vehicle lost traction and struck a guardrail, sustaining disabling front-end damage and requiring a tow. No injuries were reported.
On Wednesday, January 21, at 3:37 p.m., state police investigated a two-vehicle crash on North Manor Road west of Bulltown Road in West Nantmeal Township involving a Subaru Outback driven by a 19-year-old Honey Brook woman and a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 35-year-old Glenmoore woman. Police documentation indicates suspected minor injuries and reflects an allegation that one driver followed too closely.
On Thursday, January 22, at 1:51 p.m., troopers handled another two-vehicle crash tied to spacing in traffic, this time on the U.S. 30 eastbound on-ramp at the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass in Valley Township. Police reported the truck lost traction on snowy pavement, slid to the right shoulder, struck a snow embankment, and then hit a guardrail. Troopers reported no injuries and indicated the driver was cited for allegedly driving at an unsafe speed.
Two separate crashes were documented on Thursday, January 29, in different parts of the county. At 8:23 a.m., troopers investigated a crash on U.S. 202 southbound about 215 feet east of Swedesford Road in East Whiteland Township involving a 2022 Nissan Rogue driven by a 29-year-old woman. Police reported both vehicles lost control and entered the median during the incident, with no injuries reported.
A more serious crash was documented Sunday, February 1, at 11:15 a.m. on Coldstream Road south of Maryhill Road in Charlestown Township. Troopers reported that a driver traveling too fast for conditions entered a curve, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with another vehicle. Police documentation shows multiple occupants were evaluated for injuries, with at least two people transported to hospitals for treatment. Troopers indicated citations were filed alleging unsafe speed and lane-control violations.
Later on February 1, at 4:12 p.m., troopers responded to another single-vehicle crash on the U.S. 30 eastbound bypass near mile marker 277.7 in Caln Township. Police reported an 89-year-old Coatesville man driving a 2008 Honda Accord attempted to pull onto the shoulder, hit an icy patch, and slid off the roadway into a grassy area where the vehicle struck a tree. Police reported no injuries.
The release also documents a crash Monday, February 2, at 9:03 p.m. on the U.S. 30 Bypass west of Route 113 in Caln Township involving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 51-year-old Honey Brook woman and a tractor-trailer driven by a 24-year-old man from Cincinnati, Ohio.
