CHESTER COUNTY, PA — The week of Christmas is shaping up to be a classic Chester County weather sampler platter: sunshine, cold nights, a flirtation with snow, and a dash of rain just in time for holiday travel. Nothing extreme, but just enough variety to keep everyone checking the forecast — and debating whether to scrape the windshield or grab an umbrella.

Today opens with mostly sunny skies and a high near 42. Northwest winds of 5 to 15 mph, gusting up to 30 mph, will make it feel colder than it looks. It’s a decent day to be outside, as long as you don’t trust the sun too much.

Tonight stays mostly clear and sharply colder, with lows around 21. Northwest winds remain light but gusty at times, making it a good night to bring in the pets and double-check the thermostat.

Monday brings increasing clouds and cooler air, with highs topping out near 38. Winds relax, but Monday night introduces our first winter wildcard. There’s a 50 percent chance of snow after 1 a.m., with less than a half inch of accumulation possible. Enough to dust cars and sidewalks — just not enough to justify canceling plans.

Tuesday keeps the unsettled pattern going. A mix of rain and snow is possible early in the morning, transitioning to rain by late morning and early afternoon. Highs climb to around 45, limiting snow accumulation. Tuesday night clears out with lows around 34.

Wednesday offers a brief weather reward: sunny skies and a high near 43. Clouds return late Wednesday night with a slight chance of rain as temperatures dip to around 30.

Christmas Day looks gray but manageable. There’s a 40 percent chance of rain before early afternoon, with highs near 44 — not exactly postcard weather, but far from a holiday disaster. Rain chances linger into Thursday night with lows around 36.

Friday trends milder but damp, with a 40 percent chance of rain and highs reaching near 51. Friday night cools back down to around 30 under mostly cloudy skies.

Saturday rounds out the week partly sunny and seasonably cool, with highs near 41 — a calm finish after a week of winter mood swings.
