Speed limits have been temporarily reduced to 45 mph on key interstates and U.S. routes throughout the region. Officials warn that additional adjustments may occur depending on snowfall rates, road surface conditions, and visibility.
Tier 4 vehicle restrictions also took effect at 6:00 PM Sunday on numerous interstate and Turnpike segments in eastern Pennsylvania. Under Tier 4 rules, all commercial vehicles are prohibited, along with school buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs, and passenger vehicles towing trailers.
Drivers who must travel should expect reduced visibility, drifting snow, and rapidly deteriorating pavement conditions. Plan extra time, increase following distance, and keep headlights on. During whiteouts, pull safely off the roadway before stopping—never halt in a travel lane.
Last winter, more than 8,300 crashes occurred statewide on snow- or ice-covered roads, resulting in 29 fatalities.
Restrictions may be lifted as conditions improve.
