EAST WHITELAND TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is moving forward with comprehensive repairs on Route 29 (Morehall Road) and U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) to address recurring sinkhole issues. The $22.4 million project aims to ensure the long-term safety and stability of these corridors, which have been plagued by subsurface voids and repeated emergency repairs.
Currently, northbound Route 29 in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, is restricted to a single southbound lane between Old Morehall Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange. Southbound traffic is also limited to one lane through the work zone. This configuration will remain in place until late July, when traffic will shift to newly constructed northbound lanes. Median restoration and final paving are scheduled to conclude by mid-October.
Sinkhole remediation on U.S. 202 in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, has closed the northbound section between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard around the clock. Drivers on both roadways should expect delays, as all work is weather-dependent.
A key feature of the project involves the application of a “limited mobility grouting program.” This technique requires drilling a grid of holes into the pavement and injecting pressurized grout to fill voids beneath the surface. The approach is designed to stabilize the roadbed and reduce the likelihood of future sinkholes. Additional improvements include drainage upgrades and pavement reconstruction.
Heidelberg Materials, LLC, a northeast region firm, is managing the project, which is entirely funded by federal dollars. The repairs follow a series of sinkhole incidents that disrupted traffic and underscored the need for a permanent solution. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time when traveling in the area and exercise caution throughout the construction period.
