Lane Closures Grip Busy Route 202 Intersection as PennDOT Pushes Safety Fix

Traffic Advisory

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — Drivers traveling through one of Chester County’s most congested intersections should expect continued daytime delays as PennDOT advances a construction project aimed at reducing crashes and easing traffic flow.

PennDOT said roadway construction is underway at the intersection of U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) in Thornbury and Westtown townships as part of a $2.9 million safety improvement project.

Through Friday, January 30, periodic lane closures with flagging will be in place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the intersection. PennDOT warned motorists to expect backups and delays during work hours and advised drivers to allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The project includes construction of a new southbound right-turn deceleration lane on U.S. 202 at Route 926, along with a new eastbound left-turn lane on Route 926. Once completed, the eastbound approach will feature a double left-turn configuration designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow through the intersection.

Additional work includes upgraded traffic signalization, installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps, and milling and paving operations throughout the work zone.

PennDOT said the project also includes special monitoring provisions to protect the Westtown Inn, located in the northwest quadrant of the intersection. The historic inn was determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2015.
