WEST CHESTER, PA — The difficult transition from military service to civilian life will take center stage in West Chester this September when a free documentary screening brings veterans, families and community members together for a conversation about trauma, healing and the importance of connection.
The Chester County Suicide Prevention Partnership and West Chester University’s Veterans Center will present The Journey Home on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre in WCU’s Swoope Music Building and Performing Arts Center.
Created by local filmmaker Gary Chilutti of Films-4-Good, the documentary examines the experiences of military veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder and the challenges some face when returning to civilian life. Through the stories of veterans, their families and members of their communities, the film explores isolation, depression and hopelessness while emphasizing the role that understanding and support can play in recovery.
Following the screening, attendees will be invited to take part in a community conversation about the film and the experiences veterans may encounter as they transition home from military service.
Chilutti said he has been especially encouraged by veterans who believe the documentary reflects their experiences across different generations and backgrounds.
“I’m most humbled and grateful that veterans both around the Delaware Valley and across the country feel this film accurately describes their experience across generational, ethnic, and gender lines,” Chilutti said. “If the film helps save one life or helps give understanding and hope to a family member or loved one, it is a mission accomplished.”
Organizers describe The Journey Home as an uplifting but candid look at veterans recovering from trauma and finding purpose through connection with others.
The evening is free and open to the public, although advance registration is encouraged.
