WEST CHESTER, PA — In a significant step towards bolstering youth development, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has launched the Y Achievers program, targeting children in grades 5 through 8. This initiative, coupled with enhancements to the existing 7th Grade Initiative, aims to support personal achievement and community growth, offering free membership to participants.

The Y Achievers program is a testament to the YMCA’s continued commitment to youth empowerment through mentorship and skill-building workshops. Historically, the program traces its roots to the Black Achievers initiative established in 1967 by Quentin Mease at the South Central YMCA in Houston, Texas. Designed initially to support the career aspirations of black and brown youth, it expanded in 1971 at the Harlem YMCA, forming the foundation for today’s nationwide Y Achievers program.

YGBW’s incorporation of Y Achievers is tailored to meet the specific needs of Chester County’s youth. The program invites children from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds to participate at the Coatesville and Jennersville branches. It aims to guide participants in setting and achieving personal goals, ensuring high school graduation and career planning, thereby fostering a sense of purpose and self-confidence.

Jazmyn Hudson, Association Director of Teen Programming, emphasizes the importance of addressing local youth challenges, stating, “I am excited to help them discover and develop their passions, solve problems in their neighborhoods, and increase their self-confidence.”

The broader community stands to benefit significantly from this initiative. Research highlights the positive impact of out-of-school-time (OST) programs, which have demonstrated considerable returns on investment by reducing high school dropout rates, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse. In recognition of these benefits, YGBW received $816,750 in grant funding from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, highlighting the value of such programs for state residents.

In tandem with Y Achievers, YGBW is enhancing its 7th Grade Initiative. The Coatesville, Jennersville, and Upper Main Line branches are piloting the program’s expansion, which includes new fitness activities and volunteer opportunities, further enriching the youth experience.

Both initiatives are generously supported by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, reflecting a community-wide commitment to nurturing future leaders. Bertram L. Lawson II, a key advocate for these programs, highlights their importance: “Teens are our future leaders—and we want to ensure they have the tools needed to succeed in school and in life.”

Through Y Achievers and the revamped 7th Grade Initiative, YGBW is setting a standard for youth programming, creating pathways for success and fostering a stronger, more resilient community.
