WEST CHESTER, PA — A Chester County initiative is enlisting salon professionals in the fight against domestic violence. Since its launch in April 2025, the Shear Hope training program has partnered with three local salons to equip beauty professionals with the tools to recognize signs of abuse and connect clients to vital support services.
The initiative is led by the Chester County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office and the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). The program is built on the premise that cosmetologists and barbers often develop close relationships with their clients, placing them in a unique position to detect signs of distress.
Training sessions are held on Mondays, when many salons are closed, and feature presentations from law enforcement, victim advocates, and legal professionals. Participants receive a comprehensive resource packet that includes contact information for support services, legal aid, and survivor advocacy organizations.
Shear Hope aims to provide practical knowledge and communication strategies that help professionals offer assistance in a non-threatening, supportive manner without endangering those affected.
The program will continue to expand throughout 2025, with more salons and barbershops expected to take part. Registration is open to any Chester County salon or barbershop interested in hosting a training session.
Shear Hope represents a growing community-based approach to domestic violence prevention — one that emphasizes early intervention, trusted relationships, and coordinated support across sectors.
