WEST CHESTER, PA — A teacher at Conestoga High School has been charged with multiple offenses following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a minor student. Officials from the Chester County District Attorney’s Office and the Tredyffrin Township Police Department announced the charges against Michelle Mercogliano, 35, of Phoenixville, on counts including Institutional Sexual Assault, Corruption of Minors, and Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
According to the criminal complaint, the alleged misconduct began in February 2025, when Mercogliano, employed as a teacher at Conestoga High School, reportedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. The complaint further alleges that she provided marijuana to the student during this period.
Authorities were alerted to the allegations earlier this week, prompting an immediate investigation by the Tredyffrin Township Police Department. The investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Chester County Detectives, led to the filing of charges. Officials also confirmed that swift action was taken to ensure Mercogliano no longer has any contact with students within the school district.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe addressed the severity of the case in a public statement. “Parents and students should be able to trust their teachers. The Defendant broke the law and destroyed that trust. It will not be tolerated,” he said.
Tredyffrin Township Police Chief Michael Beaty expressed similar sentiments, describing the allegations as “shocking and disturbing.” Chief Beaty further emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting the victim and their family as part of the investigative process.
While Mercogliano has not yet been taken into custody, officials reported that she is cooperating with law enforcement through her attorney and is in the process of arranging a surrender.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office has reiterated the importance of reporting concerns about child safety.
