NEW CASTLE, DE — Two individuals are facing charges after police said a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle escalated into a pursuit and foot chase Wednesday night.
According to Delaware State Police, at approximately 8:00 p.m. on March 25, a trooper on patrol observed a stolen Mitsubishi Outlander near Memorial Drive and North Dupont Parkway and initiated a traffic stop.
Police reported the driver initially stopped but then fled, leading troopers on a pursuit onto Irwin Avenue, where the vehicle stopped at a dead end.
According to investigators, both the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Authorities said troopers apprehended the driver, identified as 31-year-old Paige Patterson of Bear, after a brief foot pursuit. Police reported Patterson allegedly showed signs of impairment and was found to have a suspended driver’s license.
Police said the passenger, a 52-year-old Newark man, fled over a fence before being located in a wooded area with assistance from the Delaware State Police Aviation Section and taken into custody.
According to authorities, both individuals were transported to Troop 2. Police reported a search warrant was obtained for Patterson’s blood after she allegedly continued to show signs of impairment.
Authorities said Patterson was charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and disregarding a police officer’s signal, along with resisting arrest, driving under suspension, and driving under the influence of drugs. Police reported she was arraigned and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $5,600 secured bail.
According to police, the 52-year-old man was charged with resisting arrest, arraigned, and issued a $1,000 unsecured bond. Authorities said he was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on unrelated capiases.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
