WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man has been taken into custody following a police investigation into an alleged assault involving a firearm. James Cooper, 36, was arrested on February 5 in the 1700 block of West 3rd Street by members of the Wilmington Police Department’s Uniformed Services Division.
The arrest stems from an incident reported on January 8 at approximately 6:09 p.m. Officers responded to the same area after receiving a complaint about a person with a firearm. Upon their arrival, they located a victim with minor injuries who stated they had been physically assaulted and threatened with a gun.
Following an investigation, Cooper was identified as a suspect, and warrants for his arrest were obtained. Police encountered Cooper nearly a month later in the same vicinity and were able to take him into custody without incident.
Cooper now faces multiple charges, including Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Aggravated Menacing, and Third-Degree Assault. He was arraigned in New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and subsequently committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution with bail set at $56,000 cash-only.
Officials remind the public that an arrest and charges are not determinations of guilt. Like all defendants, Cooper is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. The Wilmington Police Department has not released additional details regarding the case at this time.
