WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred early September 16 after a driver allegedly fled a traffic stop on Interstate 95 and crashed off roadway near Marsh Road and Edgemoor Road.
Officials said officers initiated a stop at approximately 1:16 a.m. and, as they approached, the driver—who was known to be wanted for various offenses—allegedly sped away, exiting at Marsh Road before the vehicle left the roadway and crashed. Police found four occupants inside. A four-month-old male, who investigators said was not restrained, was transported to a hospital and later died from his injuries. The driver, a 33-year-old male, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A 32-year-old female and a 10-year-old female were transported in stable condition.
Police said criminal charges against the driver are pending in connection with the pursuit and the infant’s death. Authorities emphasized that any suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The WPD Special Operations Division Traffic Unit is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Senior Corporal Keith Johnson at 302-571-4415 or Keith.Johnson@cj.state.de.us.
