Wilmington Traffic Stop Leads to Gun, Drug Charges

WILMINGTON, DE — A 28-year-old man faces gun and drug charges after Wilmington police say officers recovered a loaded revolver and several controlled substances during a traffic stop Tuesday.

Members of the Wilmington Police Department’s Drug, Organized Crime and Vice Division were near East 24th and Carter streets at about 1:15 p.m. Sept. 30 when they allegedly observed a man engaged in drug-related activity, police reported.

Police said the man entered a vehicle and left the area, prompting officers to conduct a traffic stop. Officers identified the driver as Gyheim Fitzgerald, 28, and took him into custody without incident.

During the investigation, officers allegedly recovered a loaded revolver, 4 grams of crack cocaine, 28 grams of marijuana, one oxycodone pill and a digital scale, according to police.

Fitzgerald was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said he also received traffic citations.

Fitzgerald was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 02 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $40,005 cash-only bail, according to police.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
