WILMINGTON, DE — A traffic stop attempt on April 21 led to the arrest of a Wilmington man on multiple charges, including firearm and drug offenses, following a brief vehicle and foot pursuit.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. as members of the Special Operations Division Traffic Unit were conducting patrols in the area of East 30th and Jessup Streets. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation, but the driver allegedly disregarded police signals and fled the scene.
Shortly after, officers located the vehicle on the unit block of Gordon Street. Police reported that the driver, identified as 40-year-old Ira Jones, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. A brief foot pursuit ensued, resulting in Jones’ apprehension without further incident.
During the arrest, police recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and approximately 113 grams of marijuana.
Jones has been charged with several offenses, including the following:
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – Two Counts
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal
- Resisting Arrest
In addition to criminal charges, Jones faces traffic-related violations. Following his arrest, he was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $93,500 cash-only bail.
Authorities emphasized that the charges against Jones are allegations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
