SkySecure: Supporting Aviation Safety in Chester County

SkySecure

Aviation, widely regarded as the safest method of transportation, has seen significant safety improvements year after year. However, when mishaps occur, the consequences can be catastrophic, often endangering lives and exposing limitations in existing monitoring and security systems. One such vulnerability is the susceptibility of aircraft communication and surveillance signals to Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) spoofing, a known security weakness in the ADS-B system, which is due to its lack of encryption and authentication; this allows attackers to inject falsified aircraft position data or “ghost” aircraft into surveillance feeds.

SkySecure was innovated by Aryan Mitra, a Chester County high school student with a strong interest in cybersecurity, aviation, and public service. What began as an independent learning project evolved into a real-world application of STEM education and an overall benefit for the community.

SkySecure does not interact with or interfere with aircraft systems. Conversely, it showcases a platform where users can see airplane data from across the globe, while also showing airplane speed, altitude, spoofed probability, and airplane flight codes.

So why does SkySecure matter?

Airports and surrounding airspace play a vital role in Chester County by supporting:

  • Emergency medical and disaster response
  • Public safety and law enforcement operations
  • Business travel and economic development
  • Regional and community connectivity

As systems become more interconnected, cybersecurity awareness is an important part of things like long-term resilience and preparedness. Student-led projects like SkySecure highlight the value of encouraging young people to engage thoughtfully with real infrastructure challenges.
