PHILADELPHIA, PA — Overnight drivers near Penn’s Landing and Center City Philadelphia should prepare for major detours next week as PennDOT shuts down part of Columbus Boulevard for construction tied to the massive I-95 CAP project.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: Columbus Boulevard (between Spruce Street and Callowhill Street)
- Dates: Sunday, May 17 – Thursday, May 21
- Times: Nightly, 11:00 PM – 5:00 AM
- Reason: Overhead beam installation for the I-95 CAP project
Columbus Boulevard will be closed in both directions overnight between Spruce Street and Callowhill Street while crews install large structural beams above the roadway as part of the ongoing interstate cover project.
Northbound drivers will be detoured using Spruce Street, 5th Street, and Race Street to reconnect with Columbus Boulevard. Southbound motorists will be directed to use Callowhill Street, 6th Street, Pine Street, Front Street, and Spruce Street around the closure zone.
Signs will be posted along the detour routes, and access to the Hilton Hotel and the Seaport Museum at Penn’s Landing will remain open throughout the work.
PennDOT warned drivers to expect backups and slower overnight travel near the waterfront and surrounding Center City corridors. Motorists should plan extra time and seek alternate routes where possible.
The overnight closures will allow contractors to install 18 of the 80 beams needed to expand the covered area above I-95 between Chestnut Street and Walnut Street. Additional beam installation work over I-95 North and Columbus Boulevard is expected to resume later this fall.
