WILMINGTON, DE — A routine traffic stop in Wilmington resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old man on drug charges, according to an announcement made by the Wilmington Police.
On February 9, at approximately 2:25 p.m., officers from the Uniformed Services Division were on patrol in the 700 block of North Spruce Street when they observed a motor vehicle committing a traffic violation. The officers then conducted a stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Marshawn Backus.
Following a brief investigation at the scene, Backus was taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, police reportedly recovered 737 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and $360 in cash from Backus’ possession.
Backus now faces several charges in connection to the incident. In addition to traffic violations, he has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver, Possession of a Controlled Substance in Tier 1 Quantity, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
After his arraignment in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas, Backus was released after posting $10,200 in secured bail.
As with all criminal cases, it is important to note that an arrest or charge does not equate to a declaration of guilt. Backus, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
