CHESTER, PA — A sweeping musical journey inspired by one of the world’s most mysterious places will take center stage in Chester this month as acclaimed Philadelphia trumpeter and composer John Vanore performs with his ensemble Abstract Truth at Widener University.

The special concert on Sunday, March 22 celebrates the release of Vanore’s ambitious new album Easter Island Suite, a cinematic four-part jazz composition decades in the making. The performance will be held in Kapelski Recital Hall as part of Widener University’s annual artist-in-residence concert series.

Vanore, a longtime Widener artist-in-residence, will lead the large ensemble through a musical exploration inspired by the remote Pacific island known for its massive stone statues, or moai. The composition reflects the landscape, culture, and enduring mystery of Easter Island—an idea that first sparked Vanore’s imagination more than 40 years ago.

“I was home alone,” Vanore recalled about the moment the piece began to take shape. “So I started to wonder, ‘What’s the loneliest place on Earth?’ And I immediately thought of Easter Island.”

That passing thought eventually grew into a sprawling musical work composed in four movements that guide listeners through an imagined journey across the island.

The opening movement, “Discovery,” captures the feeling of arriving on shore and encountering the monumental statues for the first time. Other movements explore spiritual conflict, hidden cave systems, and the volcanic crater where the statues were carved.

Critics have praised the project’s scope and atmosphere. Writing for DownBeat, critic Ed Enright described the work as “an appropriately epic work characterized by towering musical structures and solos that probe deep into realms of hidden beauty… a profound accomplishment.”

Vanore’s ensemble Abstract Truth has deep roots in the Philadelphia jazz scene. Formed in the 1980s as a large jazz ensemble, the group has recorded multiple acclaimed albums and reunited in recent years to continue performing new work.

Several longtime members appear on the recording and in concert, including alto saxophonist and flutist Michael Mee, bassist Craig Thomas, pianist Ron Thomas, saxophonist and bass clarinetist Bob Howell, and guitarist Greg Kettinger.

Beyond performing, Vanore has spent decades shaping jazz education in the region. At Widener University, he built a widely respected jazz ensemble program that has produced numerous recordings and given students opportunities to explore jazz performance and composition.
