Uglies Kettle Chips Celebrates Upcycling Month with Social Media Contest

Uglies Kettle Chips

WOMELSDORF, PA — Uglies Kettle Chips, known for transforming ‘ugly potatoes’ into delectable kettle-cooked chips, is embracing Upcycling Month this June with an engaging social media contest. Fans are invited to share their creative upcycling projects for a chance to win a year’s supply of Uglies chips.

Uglies, a division of Dieffenbach’s Potato Chips Inc., aims to tackle food waste, support farmers, and combat hunger by using imperfect potatoes that would otherwise be discarded. In the U.S., 26% of produce is thrown away due to cosmetic flaws. Uglies addresses this issue by creating snacks from these otherwise wasted potatoes and donating 10% of its profits to VivaKids, a charity focused on global hunger relief.

National Upcycling Day falls on June 24, but Uglies plans to celebrate upcycling throughout the month of June. “We are proud to be an Upcycled Certified™ brand with a mission-driven purpose at its core to reduce food waste while also helping farmers and fighting hunger,” said Bob Zender, Director of Marketing. “We are celebrating Upcycling Month in a fun way to reward people for their own upcycling efforts to help draw attention to this important effort. We are excited to see all the creative ways people are upcycling in their own lives,” he added.

To enter the contest, fans can visit Uglies’ Instagram page @ugliessnacks and comment on the post announcing the contest by June 21. Winners will be revealed on National Upcycling Day, June 24.

Uglies Kettle Chips hold the Upcycled Certified™ designation from the Upcycled Food Association. The association reports a significant rise in sales of upcycled snacks, with overall Dollar Sales increasing more than 500% since 2021. Uglies Kettle Chips have seen even more impressive growth, with sales up over 600% in the past three years, and expanding about 20 times faster than the Shelf Stable Potato Chips sub-category since 2022.
