PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that construction work on a major roadway and bridge project in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia will continue next week. The project, valued at $7.8 million, involves replacing the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
From Monday, January 15, through Friday, January 19, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, a partial left lane closure will be in effect on the northbound U.S. 1 Roosevelt Boulevard ramp at Old York Road. The closure is necessary to carry out roadway, curb, and drainage improvement work.
During the same period, motorists can expect periodic single left lane closures on both northbound and southbound U.S. 1 Roosevelt Boulevard between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street. These closures are necessary for barrier installation and shoulder work.
Given these disruptions, motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the affected areas. Backups and delays are expected, and drivers may wish to consider using an alternate route. PennDOT has stressed that all scheduled activities are weather-dependent and subject to change.
In addition to these disruptions, drivers are reminded that the southbound U.S. 13 Hunting Park Avenue ramp will remain closed around the clock through Monday, January 22, when it is scheduled to reopen to traffic. During this closure, southbound U.S. 1 Roosevelt Boulevard motorists are being directed to use Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 Hunting Park Avenue.
The project involves removing the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 Roosevelt Boulevard. The structure will be replaced with a single-span, pre-stressed, precast concrete bridge that will provide additional vertical clearance.
Further improvements include constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches to the new bridge; performing full-depth paving; and installing and constructing new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guide rail, and pavement markings.
The general contractor for the project is South State, Inc., of Bridgeton, New Jersey. The project is financed entirely with federal funds.
