BALA CYNWYD, PA — Susquehanna International Group has hired C++ creator Bjarne Stroustrup as a technical fellow to advise its engineering teams on the programming language underpinning the quantitative trading firm’s trading, research and risk-management systems across global markets.
Stroustrup is working with Susquehanna engineers on the firm’s C++ infrastructure, including modern language standards, software architecture and engineering practices. His appointment comes as quantitative trading firms continue to rely on high-performance computing systems where execution speed, reliability and scalability are operational requirements.
C++ is a core component of Susquehanna’s technology platform. The firm said Stroustrup will help guide the optimization and evolution of its codebase as its systems grow in complexity.
“Financial software places extraordinary demands on performance, reliability, and maintainability, making it one of the most interesting applications of modern software engineering,” Stroustrup stated.
He added that meeting those requirements involves language design and engineering practices as well as programming performance.
Susquehanna is also increasing its involvement with the broader C++ developer community, becoming a Platinum sponsor of CppCon 2026, scheduled for Sept. 12-18 in Aurora, Colorado. Financial terms of the sponsorship and Stroustrup’s appointment were not disclosed.
Soma Bockelman, Susquehanna’s global head of technology, described C++ as a foundational technology for the firm’s work and tied Stroustrup’s appointment to its investment in high-performance systems.
“Welcoming Dr. Stroustrup as a Technical Fellow and supporting CppCon as a Platinum sponsor reflects our commitment to investing in the technologies, people, and ideas that will shape the next generation of high-performance systems,” Bockelman stated.
Susquehanna’s CppCon sponsorship includes support for the conference’s Meet the Speakers Banquet. Andy Webber, the firm’s trading systems tech lead, is also scheduled to give a technical presentation on using C++26 reflection for binary protocol support.
The presentation will examine potential applications, limitations and implementation considerations for the language feature.
For Susquehanna, Stroustrup’s appointment puts the creator of one of its principal programming languages directly alongside engineers responsible for technology supporting the firm’s quantitative trading operations, giving the company additional technical expertise as it develops its computing infrastructure.
