NORTH EAST, MD — Seven Cecil College students received a combined $7,000 in scholarships this fall from the Upper Bay Ruritan Club, extending a two-decade funding program that helps local students pursue college degrees and workforce credentials.
The Cecilton-based service organization awarded $1,000 to each recipient, supporting students enrolled in fields including early childhood education, computer science, and general studies.
The scholarships are part of a longstanding partnership with the college. The Upper Bay Ruritan Club has contributed more than $100,000 in educational assistance over the past two decades, primarily supporting graduates of Bohemia Manor High School.
The seven recipients and their academic programs are:
- Addi Sample — General Studies
- Bailey Duff — Early Childhood Education
- Sophie Azoulay — General Studies
- Bryce McCoy — Computer Science
- Areli Cano Lopez — General Studies
- Violet Harris — General Studies
- Danielle Richardson — General Studies
Sample is scheduled to graduate in December with an associate degree in General Studies.
“I am incredibly grateful for the financial support provided by the Upper Bay Ruritan Club and for the difference it makes in my ability to pursue my education and future goals,” Sample stated.
Cano Lopez recently completed prerequisites for Cecil College’s nursing program and earned certified nursing assistant credentials with assistance from the scholarship.
“I have some job interviews lined up and plan to begin the nursing program next year,” Cano Lopez explained. “I am grateful for the support you have provided, as it has helped me to pursue my career goals.”
The Upper Bay Ruritan Club finances its scholarship program through community fundraising activities, including its annual Fall Spaghetti Dinner.
Club President Jeremy Rothwell described the scholarships as an extension of the organization’s commitment to community development and educational opportunities.
“These scholarships represent more than financial assistance. They reflect our belief in the potential of our young people and our hope for the future,” Rothwell stated.
The contributions support a broader scholarship program administered through the Cecil College Foundation, which has provided nearly $500,000 in student scholarships with assistance from community organizations and donors.
Cecil College President Mary Way Bolt acknowledged the club’s continuing financial support and its role in helping students complete their education.
“The Upper Bay Ruritans have been such generous donors to the college for quite some time. You are making a tremendous impact in the lives of our students,” Bolt stated.
The Upper Bay Ruritan Club is part of a network of service organizations operating in rural communities and small towns, where local chapters raise funds and organize programs addressing community needs.
