PHILADELPHIA, PA — Heads up, Philadelphia drivers! The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced upcoming construction on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway), part of a $100.6 million project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct over the SEPTA tracks and Nicetown neighborhood.
Starting Monday, February 26, through Thursday, February 29, expect periodic single lane closures from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM on southbound U.S. 1 between 9th Street and Fox Street. During the same dates, northbound U.S. 1 will also see periodic single lane closures from 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM between Fox Street and 9th Street.
But what does a ‘periodic single lane closure’ mean? Simply put, it means one lane on the road will be temporarily closed off at different intervals. These closures are necessary for PennDOT’s contractor to perform ‘post-construction punch list activities’. This industry jargon refers to the tasks that need to be completed to finalize the project, like fixing minor issues or making final adjustments.
These closures are part of the final stages of the extensive project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a key infrastructural element in our city. While this work is underway, drivers should be prepared for potential slowdowns and increased travel times.
As with most outdoor projects, the schedule is subject to weather conditions. Unfavorable weather could lead to changes in the construction timeline.
Ultimately, when planning your commute, remember to account for possible delays and, as always, drive safely, Philadelphia.
