Quavo Finds 35% Drop in Streaming Chargeback Win Rates

Quavo Fraud & Disputes

WILMINGTON, DE — Card issuers experienced a 35% decline in successful digital subscription chargeback disputes over just 26 days, according to new research from Quavo, exposing a sharp shift in dispute recovery performance that could affect financial institutions’ operating costs and recovery forecasts.

The decline occurred even as dispute filing volumes remained relatively stable, suggesting that changes in recovery outcomes can develop independently of the number of claims banks and credit unions receive.

Quavo identified the pattern through aggregated dispute data collected across its network of financial institutions. The findings form part of the company’s newly launched Quavo Labs research platform, which analyzes fraud, payment disputes and recovery performance across multiple issuers.

Digital streaming subscriptions had maintained some of the highest chargeback win rates within the broader subscription category for nearly a year before the decline, according to the company.

The reversal illustrates a limitation of institution-level fraud analytics: changes affecting multiple issuers may be difficult to distinguish from ordinary fluctuations when banks examine only their own transaction and dispute records.

“Small anomalies across separate portfolios can look like noise. But when you bring that data together, clear, actionable patterns emerge,” said Ron Rybicki, Quavo’s vice president of data and analytics.

Rybicki, who previously spent nearly three decades developing fraud analytics within large card issuers, identified the difficulty of separating industrywide changes from institution-specific performance as a recurring operational problem.

Quavo’s analysis indicates that issuers responding to the streaming subscription decline could benefit from adjusting chargeback recovery forecasts, strengthening the information submitted with claims and comparing results across similar merchant categories.

The company processes more than 25 million disputes annually through a network supporting more than 650 brands and issuers, providing the data foundation for its research initiative.

Quavo Labs will publish monthly analyses of emerging fraud and dispute trends, including seasonal developments and changes associated with major events.

Quarterly merchant reports will examine the business categories generating significant dispute activity, while separate quarterly performance reports will track broader changes in issuer recovery rates and other operational measures.

The research will also cover airline and merchant failures, fuel fraud, repeat dispute filers and scams involving artificial intelligence.

Quavo stated that its findings will be published using anonymized, aggregated information without identifying individual financial institutions, issuers or cardholders.

Each report will include its sample size, population, comparison group, methodology and known limitations, allowing financial institutions to evaluate the findings against their own portfolios.

The streaming subscription findings demonstrate how changes in dispute outcomes can affect recovery operations before a corresponding shift becomes apparent in an individual institution’s data.
